Simple Solar Tech

Welcome to Simple Solar Tech!

Solar energy has always intrigued me. The idea that humans can use the sun’s near-infinite amount of energy to generate electricity is, simply put, amazing. As my interest in the topic grew, I became unsatisfied with the typical cursory explanation for solar energy—“solar panels turn light into electricity”—and decided to conduct some research on solar technology. What began as a Google search to discover how solar panels work became an extensive internet scavenger hunt. I came across a wide range of trustworthy sources, including promotional sites for solar companies, blog posts from professors, and energy-industry news reports, but found most of the material to be confusing, unexciting, and missing key pieces of information.

After many hours of keyword searching, reading, and careful note taking, I was able to piece together a complete picture of the technology behind the solar panel. I realized, however, that others trying to learn about solar tech may not have the desire or time to go through the same research process that I did. That’s why I created this website, Simple Solar Tech - to ensure that everyone can learn about solar technology, as the name implies, in a simple manner.

On SST you'll find detailed yet easily understandable explanations for various topics in solar technology. This includes the physical construction of solar panels, how they electrochemically function, and some of the field’s most notable challenges. Recently, I’ve consulted with researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and studied scientific journals in order to create site entries on some of the solar industry’s hottest technologies as well. Above all, I hope that this site makes learning about solar tech easy and engaging, and that it gets you excited about solar energy, if you aren't already.

Believe me, there's plenty to be excited about.

If you have any questions or topics you think I should add, feel free to email me at SimpleSolarTech@gmail.com.

Major Problems With Solar Energy Technology

Solar energy technology has the potential to provide enough electricity for the entire world to use in a cheap and efficient manner due to humanity's near-infinite access to sunlight. PV tech, however, has yet to become the world's main producer of electricity; the question everyone wants the answer to is: why? The truth is, present day PV tech is not nearly as efficient at generating and storing electricity as fossil fuel technology is. Below are three major reasons why.
